Why This Workshop Is One of a Kind
Authenticity. Creativity. Education.
As co-hosts, both Alex and I strongly believe in providing a truly one of a kind experience to all of our guests during the time spent at our workshops. Living local gives us the unique advantage of having years spent on the range photographing the Onaqui wild horses and Alex has grown up surrounded by western culture and heritage allowing for insight and access to a truly authentic experience where our guests learn about and photograph a skilled blacksmith performing his craft and the day to day horse and rider activities as they play out at a private historic ranch.
We both bring froth very different photography styles and post-processing skillsets which allow for our guests to see the scenes unfolding before them from different viewpoints and to gain knowledge and insight into creative ways to not only capture the image in camera, but to then process it to its full potential as well.
I've personally spent over 3,000 hours documenting the Onaqui wild horses and the time in the field during my workshops and private safaris is filled with their stories, their family bonds and pointers on understanding and anticipating horse behavior and communication. It's important to me that everyone who joins me on the range leaves not only with images they'll love, but memories as well and an appreciation for all the compleities that the mustangs have overcome and the deep social bonds that are formed within their herds.
We feel strongly that the best way to give participants this special once in a lifetime experience is to limit the size of our workshops. This way everyone has a personalized experience with guidance and pointers from us as co-hosts and it allows for more interaction between workshop participants that we have loved seeing lead to friendships which span well past the days spent with us in the field. We also make a point to offer more time per day in the field than found in a typical workshop so that our guests walk away feeling like they enjoyed an immersive photographic experience and made the most out of each day here in Utah.

2026 Itenerary
- Day 1 - Depart the town of Tooele 1 hour prior to dawn to arrive at the Onaqui herd management area at sunrise to begin photographing the wild mustangs in spectacular soft, warm light. Spend the morning on the range, returning to town for a midday break. Then depart the town of Tooele again later that afternoon to spend several more hours photographing the Onaqui wild mustangs until sunset. (approx. 9 hours of time in the field)
- Day 2 - Start the morning with 2 hours image review & discussion of your Onaqui wild horse images from the day before. Break for a short lunch then return to the range for another 6 hours spent photographing the Onaqui wild horses through sunset.
- Day 3 - Depart Tooele early in the morning and head north to a picturesque valley outside of Ogden Utah where we will spend the day at a working ranch photographing the art of blacksmith trade (horse shoeing, hot shoes, lots of fire and steam) cowboys/cowgirls on horseback and detail shots of antique, authentic tack in a rustic barn setting with diffused natural light. We will then return to Tooele late that evening.
